Be a Mentor with the Alberta’s Future Leaders Program

What is the Alberta’s Future Leaders Program?
The Alberta’s Future Leaders Program (AFL) collaborates with Indigenous communities in Alberta to provide a multi-summer youth program. Youth are engaged through sport, arts, recreation, leadership, and cultural activities facilitated by mentors living and working in the community. Host communities invite AFL to learn about their culture and history, and to facilitate meaningful, positive experiences for youth.

What is the role of an AFL Mentor?
AFL host communities will each employ two AFL mentors from April 28 to August 22, 2019.
As a mentor, you will:
-Be employed by an Indigenous community in Alberta
-Build strong relationships with youth and community
-Promote active and creative lifestyles
-Organize and coordinate daily sport, arts, recreation, leadership and cultural activities with a fellow mentor
-Deliver engaging and purposeful programming that responds to community needs
-Fulfill AFL program requirements and community expectations while navigating complex relationships

What do I need to be a Mentor?
Skills and Attributes:
-Experience working with Indigenous youth and/or communities
-Experience planning, organizing, and implementing sport, arts, recreation, leadership or cultural programs
-Experience creating safe and welcoming environments
-Experience working as part of a team
-Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
-Creative, adaptive and flexible problem solving skills
-Experience with conflict resolution and working in demanding situations
-Knowledge of self-care strategies and healthy coping mechanisms
Mandatory Requirements upon Commencement
-Class V Drivers’ License
-Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
-A criminal record check with vulnerable sector
-Alberta Health Services Trauma Informed Care Certification
Assets:
-Relevant Post-Secondary Education: Native Studies, Physical Education, Visual and Performing Arts, Recreation, Education, Social Work, Child/Youth Care, or related fields
-Class IV Driver’s License
-Personal Vehicle
-Mental Health First Aid Training
-Suicide Awareness Training

What is the closing date for applications?
-Applications with cover letter and resume will be accepted until February 24, 2019
-All applicants are thanked in advance for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted with interviews taking place in early March.
