Collective Action to Leave Arts Commons’ +15 Window Spaces

October 18th, 2018|

Calgary artist-run centres end exhibition partnership with Arts Commons

CALGARY, AB — In the wake of recent disputes involving Arts Commons, multiple organizations have made the decision to cease programming their respective +15 Window spaces in this facility and terminate their partnerships with Arts Commons. Departing organizations include Marion Nicoll Gallery, Stride Gallery, The New Gallery, TRUCK Contemporary Art, and Untitled Art Society.

Over the past few weeks, each departing organization has written a letter to Arts Commons outlining their specific organization’s reasons for ending their partnership. Collectively, we believe that recent events have made it clear that there is a widening gap between our respective institutional priorities and values, and those held by Arts Commons. Throughout these challenges, Arts Commons has demonstrated a lack of support and an unwillingness to respond to the pressing concerns raised by our organizations and broader communities. This is indicative of a significant partnership imbalance that has negatively impacted the artistic integrity of our organizations’ programming in these spaces, as well as hindered critical discourse regarding contemporary art in Arts Commons. Our organizations believe that we cannot in good conscience continue to invite artists in to a space within which their safety, rights, and artistic integrity cannot be guaranteed.

Our organizations acknowledge that the +15 Window spaces have created many opportunities for emerging artists, and we are committed to supporting artists early on in their careers through other venues and programming initiatives. We encourage Arts Commons to continue to make space for contemporary visual arts within its facility, and we hope that the future holds more equitable opportunities for those who will continue to work and show in the space, where all parties respect and support one another in their endeavours.

An invitation has been extended to collectively meet with Arts Commons to further outline feedback on our experience working with their organization, and where we see room for growth or a need for changes. Ultimately, our organizations strive to create spaces and opportunities in the arts that work towards more equitable and inclusive futures. At this time, Arts Commons has been unable to support us in these aspirations.

REMINDER: Fall 2018 Show + Sale Registration Deadline – Oct 18

October 15th, 2018|

Show+SaleInformationSessionReminder

Hello students!

The ACAD Students’ Association (ACADSA) invites you to participate in Show + Sale, our semi-annual art market! Each sale attracts over 1,500 customers and provides emerging artists with an opportunity to showcase and sell their professional work in a public retail setting. The upcoming sale will be held November 22-24, 2018.

Please read through the information below and contact Joel Farris, ACADSA’s Career Development Program Manager, at careers.acadsa@acad.ca if you have any questions.

How Can You Participate?

Registration for Show + Sale is a two-step process.

Step 1: All students interested in participating in the Fall Show + Sale must register through the online form before midnight on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

The form can be found at: https://form.jotform.com/ACADSA/show-sale-fall-2018

Step 2: Students who have not participated in a previous Show + Sale are required to attend a mandatory workshop designed to introduce them to the policies and procedures of Show + Sale. The workshop will be held in the Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre and attendance is taken. Please let us know before the event if you are unable to attend.

Fall 2018 Show + Sale Info Session
Thursday, October 18, 2018 | 1-1:30 pm
Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre

This workshop will introduce students to the logistical side of Show + Sale, specifically the online inventory submission process. Topics include, how to finalize registration online, attaching sales tags to inventory, and successful price-points from previous sales.

Once we have finalized registration numbers, an inventory submission sheet and link to an online submission form will be emailed to students who fulfilled the registration requirements. The deadline for inventory submissions will be Wednesday, November 7. Full details regarding inventory submissions will be distributed after registration is complete.

Show + Sale Workshops

Leading up to Show + Sale, ACADSA will be hosting professional development workshops to help you prepare for the sale! The most common feedback we received last year was requesting help on pricing your practice. On November 1, join curator, writer, and educator Diana Sherlock to learn about industry standards in pricing, CARFAC recommended artist fees, your rights as an artist to be paid fairly, and some helpful methods that successful arts professionals use when pricing their work.

Midterm Tips from your EC

October 11th, 2018|

2018-10-12 October EC Email Promo Image

Hi everyone,

We are approaching another midterm, or maybe your first midterm here at ACAD. I hope you are all finding your classes to be inspirational, informative, and fun.

My name is Fiona, I am the Director of Advocacy and Representation at ACADSA. I wanted to reach out to you at this time to share a little information about midterms. Midterms are an opportunity for you to consider your ACAD career and advocate for yourself. It is also the time and an opportunity for you to work WITH your instructors to help you get the most out of each class.

By midterms you will receive, from your instructor, a written reflection of your midterm grade. If this grade is not what you were expecting or you disagree with this grade, now is the time to discuss your grade and the class with your instructor. Often times, instructors have a system for midterm grades. For example, some instructors don’t believe in giving A’s at midterm. Some instructors believe this will encourage continued hard work or inspiration for the remainder of the term. Regardless of their reasoning, you need to know where you stand. If the grade is not what you were hoping for, you also need to know specifically why, and what you can and should achieve, in order to improve your grade. Expectations should be made very clear for both you and your instructor. If you are left with concerns of meeting the instructors expectations, you can arrange a future date to review. Be sure this future date leaves you with enough time for further work. Once you have completed this process, you must then be willing to DO THE WORK!

Mid term grade deadline – November 2nd. Last day to withdraw without a grade penalty November 8th. For more information see ACAD’s Polices and Procedures: https://www.acad.ca/about-acad/governance/policies-and-procedures

Trust that your instructor will be happy for you to take this initiative. They want you to succeed! It means you have both succeeded.

I hope this information is helpful and reduces the stress of waiting for grades. There shouldn’t be any big surprises. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage students to use Spring classes as a tool to lighten their academic load during the Fall and Winter semesters, to assist with life balance and to spend more time in the studios.

If you are experiencing overwhelming stress, or academic difficulties, there are resources to help you!
