March 7th, 2019|

2019-03-07 March EC Email Promo ImageHi Everyone,

As we approach another Midterm, I hope you are all finding your classes to be inspirational, informative, and fun.

My name is Fiona, I am the Director of Advocacy and Representation at AUArts Students’ Association (AUArts SA). I wanted to reach out to you at this time to share a little information about midterms, the first bi-annual AUArts SA student open forums, as well as the rapidly approaching Students’ Association annual elections.

AUArts SA annual elections are coming up fast and we invite all students to get involved!

Everything you need to know about the AUArts SA elections can be found at www.auarts-sa.ca/elections/, but please email me if you have any questions.

    • Media Arts + Digital Technologies Representative
    • BFA General Studies Representative
    • (2) First Year Studies Representative
    • International Students Representative
    • Advertising Representative
    • Illustration Representative
    • Photography Representative
    • Drawing Representative

The election nomination package can be found at www.auarts-sa.ca/elections/ or at the Students’ Association Office. You will have the chance to meet all the candidates on March 18 at 1pm. Voting days are March 20th and 21st from 8:00am – 5:00pm in the main mall (follow your nose to the popcorn and voting stations *voting is not required to enjoy our popcorn but please do vote).

AUArts SA is your official voice on campus and we want to advocate for ALL students! Please join us at one of our student open forums to share with us your concerns, your wants and your wildest wishes for life at AUArts. Help us advocate for YOU.

Student Forum dates and times:

March 18th @ 1pm: VCD room #450

March 20th @ 1pm: INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS room #520

March 21st @ 1pm: VISUAL ARTS room #520

March 28th @ 1pm: CRAFT AND EMERGING MEDIA room #520

Midterms are an opportunity for you to consider your AUArts career and advocate for yourself. It is also the time and an opportunity for you to work WITH your instructors to help you get the most out of each class.

By March 8th, you should have received from your instructor a written reflection of your midterm grade. If this grade is not what you were expecting or you disagree with this grade, now is the time to discuss your grade and the class with your instructor. Often times, instructors have a system for midterm grades. For example, some instructors don’t believe in giving A’s at midterm. Some instructors believe this will encourage continued hard work or inspiration for the remainder of the term. Regardless of their reasoning, you need to know where you stand. If the grade is not what you were hoping for, you also need to know specifically why, and what you can and should achieve, in order to improve your grade. Expectations should be made very clear for both you and your instructor. If you are left with concerns of meeting the instructor’s expectations, you can arrange a future date to review. Be sure this future date leaves you with enough time for further work. Once you have completed this process, you must then be willing to DO THE WORK!

Mid term grade deadline- March 8th. Last day to withdraw without a grade penalty March 15th.

ACAD Polices and Procedures Link >>> www.acad.ca/about-acad/governance/policies-and-procedures

Trust that your instructor will be happy for you to take this initiative.

They want you to succeed! It means you have both succeeded.

I hope this information is helpful and reduces the stress of waiting for grades. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage students to use Spring classes as a tool to lighten their academic load during the Fall and Winter Semesters, to assist with life balance and to spend more time in the studios.

If you are experiencing overwhelming stress, or academic difficulties, there are resources to help you!

News and Updates from your EC

February 11th, 2019|

2019-02-11 February EC Email Promo Image - GiphyHello! My name is Alena and I am your Students’ Association’s Director of Cultural and Community Affairs, a part of the Executive Committee (EC). Now that the semester is back in full swing, let me share some new and important information.

As you have probably noticed we now officially attend the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts)! Along with the change, ACADSA has a new name as well, chosen by the Provincial Government. We are now the Alberta University of the Arts Students’ Association (AUArts SA).

Our usernames across social media have changed to @auarts.sa for Facebook and Instagram and @auarts_sa for twitter. We are in the process of moving our website over to www.auarts-sa.ca. After careful consideration, we have decided to use just our logo leaf and an interim wordmark while we evaluate our brand and logo with the student body to ensure it is in sync with who we are and where we are going. We know that designing and changing a logo is a process that involves many steps, many people and takes some time, so it will be a gradual change-over. We will be involving the student body to finalize our a new logo for the new academic year (2019/2020). If you would like to be more involved with this process, please reach out to your SLC representatives (www.acadsa.ca/about/leadership-council/) to find out about their meetings.

Although Midterms are still a whole month away, it’s never too early to start thinking about your grades and making sure you’re on track. Especially if you are in the latter half of your degree, make sure to be booking time to visit the academic counselor located in AUArts’ registrar’s office.

February is also the time of year where it is important to be taking time for yourself and scheduling breaks. This time of year can be very stressful for students so sometimes it’s important to take a step back. I’ve included some very helpful resources in Calgary that are accessible to every individual. Remember, if you are struggling please don’t be afraid to reach out because no problem is too small or unimportant to be seeking help.

This semester has its upsides though! The technicians have been working very hard towards increasing their knowledge about sexual violence. With the new policy in place, the initiative was taken to further their knowledge by taking a free course offered through Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse. They now have some basic training on responding to disclosures of sexual violence.

Our team at AUArts SA has also been working away at a new sexual violence awareness campaign. A new section has launched on our website designated for statistics about sexual violence as well as a list of resources that are accessible and safe spaces for anyone, include communities such as LGBTQ2+. It can be found at www.acadsa.ca/sexual-violence-awareness

Officially the Alberta University of the Arts Students’ Association

February 1st, 2019|

We officially attend the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts)! Along with the change, ACADSA has a new name as well, chosen by the Provincial Government. We are now the Alberta University of the Arts Students’ Association (AUArts SA).

Our mission is still the same: “The Alberta University of the Arts Students’ Association (AUArts SA) is a visible and vocal student-run organization that represents a creative community of students. We promote health & well-being, provide professional growth opportunities and champion students’ interests.”

Sincerely,

Simone Saunders
Director of Leadership and Governance
