Vitamin D Lamps Available

January 24th, 2019|

vitamin d lampsDid you know ACADSA has four Vitamin D lamps available for rent? Stop by the ACADSA office to pick up your lamp today!

Weather often affects people’s moods. Sunlight breaking through clouds can lift our spirits, while a dull, rainy day may make us feel a little gloomy. While noticeable, these shifts in mood generally do not affect our ability to cope with daily life. Some people, however, are vulnerable to a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern. For them, the shortening days of late autumn are the beginning of a type of clinical depression that can last until spring. This condition is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

A mild form of SAD, often referred to as the “winter blues,” causes discomfort, but is not incapacitating. However, the term “winter blues” can be misleading; some people have a rarer form of SAD which is summer depression. This condition usually begins in late spring or early summer. Awareness of this mental condition has existed for more than 150 years, but it was only recognized as a disorder in the early 1980s. Many people with SAD may not be aware that it exists or that help is available. SAD can be a debilitating condition, preventing sufferers from functioning normally. It may affect their personal and professional lives, and seriously limit their potential. It is important to learn about the symptoms, and to know that there is treatment to help people with SAD live a productive life year-round.

News and Updates from your EC

January 18th, 2019|

2019-01-18 January EC Email ImageWelcome or welcome back students to our winter semester! The bright side is that our days are becoming longer each day.

Those of you on campus last semester may recognize me from ACADSA, my name is Simone Saunders and I am the Director of Leadership & Governance. Thank you to everyone who joined the announcement of our University name change with the Honourable Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education and Honourable Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism! ALBERTA UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS! If you were unable to celebrate with us for the media event then mark February 1st on your calendar as it is the OFFICIAL launch of our name change! If you have questions about yesterday’s event or the name change please email communications@acad.ca.

In line with the exciting name change for the now Alberta University of the Arts, ACADSA will now become the Alberta University of the Arts Students’ Association (AUArtsSA?). More information about our students’ association’s upcoming rebranding process will be made available in the next few weeks.

The Fall term has brought momentum in Winter! The Student Leadership Committee (SLC) has been meeting bi-weekly to discuss student/department needs, concerns and successes. Please be sure to notify your SLC department rep if you have anything to discuss. Photos of our representatives (if you have yet to see them confettied around the school!) are available on our website. Visit their profiles here: www.acadsa.ca/about/.

The SLC has requested to ACAD Cabinet and Security, on behalf of the student body, to have two side doors within the building accessible through access card only. This will ensure more safety and security on campus. Please have your pass with you at all times, as most of us are already accustomed. The doors leading into the cafeteria, as well as the doors facing the parkade near the sculpture studio entrance will be locked 24/7 as of January 21st, 2019. Any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to ask your SLC representative or step into ACADSA to speak with any member of the Executive Committee (EC).

Your Executive Committee has been dedicating to advocating for specific initiatives within our community, with much ground work and success in the Fall term. These include:

  1. Promoting awareness of and create positive change in regards to sexual violence and assault incidents and policies. With campaign’s starting January, proceeding to the end of the school year. Your EC is lobbying on a provincial level for Sexual Violence Policy standards in November and March (ASEC) and within campus committees.
  2. Creating opportunities for students enhancing a sense of belonging and opening inter-department connection. To spread positive gossip and promote community initiatives. This is strongly urged through the SLC October-April, through meetings, social media hashtags, events, student groups and positive gossip.
  3. Clarity of relationship with ACAD. Creating organizational charts for ACADSA manuals and developing collaboration agreements that recognize ACADSA as an equal contributor in joint programming initiatives with ACAD and external organizations.

Any questions you have for us—or if you feel you want to be involved in any way—don’t hesitate to contact myself or members of the Executive Committee. We are open to speaking with you and encourage you to connect with us!

The winter term can prove to be a difficult balance with the cold season. Please be advised to use our on campus services:

For academic support: www.acad.ca/current-students/get-support/academic-support

For Counselling: www.acad.ca/current-students/get-support/counselling-services

ACADSA Health + Dental Plan members have access to Empower Me, a mental health and wellness service that offers confidential and accessible support in multiple languages. Call 1 844 741-6389 to connect with trained counsellors, consultants, and life coaches 24/7, 365 days/year for a variety of issues. There is also an app available! For more information: http://studentcare.ca/rte/en/AlbertaCollegeofArtDesignACADSA_EmpowerMe_EmpowerMe

We are trying to limit the amount of emails you receive from us this year, so to stay up to date on what is happening at the Students’ Association please check out News and Events on our website (www.acadsa.ca) and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram – @ACADSA.

Have an incredible semester students! See you in the halls! If I’m not in the ACADSA office, you can certainly find me this semester in the loom room of the fibre wing on the 4th floor.  :)
