Hear/d Residency Guidelines

PROJECTS

Participants will meet on a semi regular basis to discuss their goals, what motivated them to partake in this program and to become acquainted with the requirements and schedule of the program. During these meetings, participants will have the opportunity as a group to brainstorm specific research topics that they feel will relate to their creative practice as well as to the themes of the residency. Participants are required to communicate with the Hear/d student mentors on their proposed project and if necessary go through the process of submitting to the ACAD Research Ethics Board to ensure that college policies and procedures are adhered to. All works must be created specifically for the program and not reused for academic purposes. It should be noted that it is neither the goal of ACADSA nor ACAD to censor student lead projects however, it is our responsibility as members of the ACAD community to be aware of the impact that our work may have on fellow campus members. As such, it is imperative that community health, wellness and safety be taken into consideration.

RESEARCH

As part of the Hear/d Residency, participants are required to relate their research projects around the theme of resilience. Part of the mandate of this residency is to de-stigmatize and raise awareness towards mental health concerns that affect a large number of post-secondary students. This research will serve the purpose of providing a contextual background to the students’ work as part of this residency.
Over the course of the program, participants will be required to construct an artist statement which will refer to how their work relates to theme of the residency, as well as a short response to showcase how their views/beliefs/attitudes have changed over the course of this program. This will serve as an educational component which will be installed next to their artwork for the duration of the exhibition. Participants will also take part in a studio visit which will be hosted by the Hear/d student mentors, as well as taking part in a group critique.

MATERIALS

Participants are invited to use whatever materials they feel communicate their ideas most effectively. However, students must comply with all ACAD Health + Safety regulations, and if necessary must go through the process of submitting to the Research Ethics Board.

ARTIST FEES

ACADSA will provide each of the participants with a $250.00 honorarium to support the time, resources, and materials required to participate in the program.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

The application process is entirely electronic. Direct email and paper submissions will NOT be accepted. Due to the number of submissions received, the quantity of support material in the application is restricted. The jury will not review additional materials beyond the required documents. The following materials should be included in your application:

  1. Statement of interest:
    • Discuss how the theme of this program relates to your current artistic practice and the broader context of your work, research, and interests.
    • Outline your interest in the program and understanding of the importance of mental health support.
  2. Curriculum Vitae: Describe your creative background to a maximum length of two pages. Please include all relevant contact information and a personal website, if applicable.
  3. Support: Please submit up to ten pieces of additional support material, including digital images, videos, or audio clips with a corresponding numbered image list. Our programming committee will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work.

Images must be RGB .jpg files with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 dpi and no larger than 1 MB in size. ACADSA accepts links to video and audio work hosted online.

Submissions open at the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters.
